January 1: a new year

There's a New Year's Eve tradition in the family of a rowdy but family-friendly party at my brother-in-law's house just up the road from home. The older two kids were all set to stay overnight, and we'd loaded the portacot in the car so Josie could sleep at her usual time.

The children all had a lovely time, Josie charming the crowds as always (and playing a little basketball) and Rohan gadding about with his little harem of teenaged girls (and Pascal).

Rohan, the little sweetheart, kept bringing me tidbits of dessert after the dessert table had been set out, a raspberry here, a slice of watermelon there. It's a clever young man who minds his mummy's tummy!

Roh was a wee bit scared of the sparklers, though Luke did manage to break through for one sparkler only! Pascal had a great time with them!

Getting towards midnight, Rohan fell asleep on my chest, so we took him off to his bed. It was all going so well until we carefully slipped off his jacket and he woke, and was distraught at the prospect of not seeing "the fireworks" at midnight. No amount of cajoling could convince him to go back to sleep so at 11.45, out we went again, and he got to enjoy the fireworks, though I have no idea how he kept his eyes open. At the end of the night, as we were about to head off, Josie was sleeping so soundly that we couldn't bear to disturb her and we were allowed to leave her overnight.

The house was so still this morning that it was only a text message that woke us at 9.45am. What bliss! A true sleep-in.

After a quiet coffee or two with toast for breakfast we set out to collect the kids, armed with two seasons of "Sopranos" DVDs to return to Matt (hoping to come home with the final series ready to watch tonight) and a bucket to bring home some worms for the worm farm Luke has worked on for the last few days. Unfortunately, Season 6 is the only season Matt doesn't own, so we'll be hunting that one down ASAP (we had our hearts set on watching it over this next holiday-y week).

Young Josie was playing basketball again when we arrived and was so content, it was a good ten minutes before she asked for a cuddle (almost unheard of). Pascal was less than impressed by our
arrival, since she was having such a lovely time with her cousin Lucy.

From there, we all piled back into the car, dropped the worms off in their new home, and set off again to visit Luke's mother at Riverview. We met with one of the nurses at the front door, and she (pretty much literally) dropped everything to find the children some stickers to wish them a happy new year.  Sue was in good spirits and enjoyed seeing the kids, who all played surprisingly well together with the little tub of Duplo we keep in Nanny's room. Roh initially resisted Daphne when she wanted to say hello, but he was soon sitting up beside her and chatting away happily.

We left there wondering what to do about food and soon set upon the idea of fish and chips for a late lunch/early dinner. For some reason after having just a banana in the evening on Christmas night, the kids think a banana is an awesome and fun dinner right now, so we sold them on the 'banana for dinner' concept yet again, and we were all happy. The original plan was to collect the fish and chips and head to Bellerive Beach but we soon realised there was a Hurricanes match on, so we headed a little further to Wentworth Park playground and BBQ area.

Lunch/dinner all done, the kids enjoyed a few minutes on the play equipment. Josie had such a great time on the slide with Luke she was all set for round two, heading straight for the steps again. Sorry, miss, it was time to head home.

We headed home, and had a coffee while Josie had her banana (I would say enjoyed, but she mostly tore it apart and threw it on the floor) and got ready for a super-early night, since she'd missed the opportunity to nap during the day. She was so tired she fell asleep breastfeeding which is something that hasn't happened in a long long time.

Pascal begged me to let them watch Toy Story 2, so we set that up for them and they enjoyed that before their own bananas, followed by their usual bedtime routines.

Now we're sitting back ready to enjoy a movie from ABC last night (Doors Open, based on an Ian Rankin novel, which I know nothing about but it ought be good easy watching while I knit and Luke builds some Lego).
